Tynemouth Market, North Shields – Review

What a delight this market was! With around 150 stalls all within this restored Victorian train station and covered from the elements by the (original?) glazed roof. Taking place every Saturday and Sunday between 9am and 3pm, there was a busy but relaxed atmosphere. Stalls were a mix of bric-a-brac and antiques to food stalls and takeaway food. There were art stalls, original interior design, graphics, t-shirts and craft stalls. There were plant stalls, scotch eggs, candles, chocolates and vegetarian/vegan fare. Occasionally a metro would whoosh in, deposit more folk and take away others. A genuinely lovely day out to be had by the many customers who visited. The aisles were well spaced out and didn’t seem cramped for stallholders at all.

Added Benefits There is the sea/beach and Tynemouth Priory very close by so footfall will always be good.

There were stalls on either side of the platforms accessed by a large walkway/bridge. Both sides had equally as much footfall. There didn’t seem to be much organisation or order in the layout of the stalls, so you had a few food stalls next to a bookstall. This didn’t seem to deter from the atmosphere or the popularity of the stalls. A few hot food stalls were placed outside of the market covering as they had their own gazebos and probably to stop their smell/cooking steam from affecting other businesses.

The Busker’s music carried through the whole station – adding even more to the atmosphere!

Overall, 9/10 for this market from a stallholder’s perspective. Footfall was tremendous and all stalls seemed to be getting trade. The only reason we didn’t give a full 10 points was that parking was an issue for customers and had there been more parking available, the venue would doubtless have been busier. A great market nonetheless.
