Ross on Wye Friday Market – Review

Ross-on-Wye Friday Market

The Ross on Wye Friday market is run by Green Top Events and consisted of around 12 stalls. On the day we visited there were a few food and drink stalls, including gin, fudge, biltong and hot takeaway burritos and some craft stalls including pottery, jewellery, gifts and handmade childrens clothing. The market itself takes place under and around the Market House which was built in 1650 and is a tourist attraction in its own right. This newer building was probably built to replace a previous wooden structure that has its origins in the 12th Century when King Stephen granted Ross the right to hold a market in the region. The Thursday and Saturday markets are run by the Town Council.

I chatted with the charming Lawrence from Tex’s Snack Shack about his business and how he started trading at market stalls in 2019.

A few craft stalls definitely stood out and they were Wooden Heart Designs with their stunning felt work pictures and Lesley Jane Jewellery with her beautiful handmade copper, silver and enamel jewellery pieces located under the Market House.

This is a lovely spot for a weekly market but it could be better supported. Perhaps due to the fact that there is a Thursday and Saturday market as well as this Friday one, it could seem like market overkill for such a small, albeit lovely town. I did not see much buying from customers going on but I was there at around 10.30 am. Perhaps things got busier later in the day?

Had a chat with an old friend, Carl, founder of Old Brenin Distillery, about business and markets. He gives some excellent advice if you are looking to start a new market stall business.

Looks like there is a good turnover of stalls each week as certain stallholders have other events to attend on certain Fridays which is good for customers and adds interest.
