Hexham Market Place, overlooked by Hexham Abbey, is a delightful setting for this age-old market. Records evidence its existence at least from the 12th Century when Hexham Abbey was built.
We visited the twice monthly Saturday farmers’ market. It is always lovely attending a market surrounded with so many old buildings and history. It helps you remember how long a market has been running and that we are mere passers-by in time.
There were less than 20 stalls selling really high quality meats and produce. From the always sold out, fabulous, Bread & Roses bread stall www.breadandroses.co.uk to what looked like a lovely wild flower stall.
Our favourite chocolate stall is a regular, www.merakicacao.com and we loved the beautifully displayed soap at www.durhamsoap.co.uk. There were stalls selling Northumberland Preserves, Northumberland Honey and local beers by Muckle Brewing.
Most of the stalls are widely spread out in the marketplace and around the abbey itself because of social distancing restrictions. In an ideal world, for this historical venue, having more stalls and positioned nearer to each other would add considerably to the atmosphere of the market and give more cohesion. As it stands, it does feel a bit disorganised and look slightly discombobulated.

The footfall is always good at this farmers’ market, and really well supported locally. The standard of the produce is excellent, from the local meat producers to organic vegetables, plants and ready meals. Many of the stalls had sold out, including the bread stall and The Yolker – hand made scotch eggs!
All in all a really good traders market.
